Michaelangelo's David
The governor of the ancient city of Florence wanted to put up a marble statue in the public square. Several sculptors tried to make a statue for the governor, but were unsuccessful. The governor was not satisfied, and they had to give up their attempts.
At that time Michaelangelo had already been recognized and the best sculptor in Florence. The governor had heard of his fame, and now he offered Michaelangelo the order to make the marble statue. Michaelangelo realized how difficult the task would be. His friends adviced him against it, saying it would probably be only a loss of time and effort. But Michaelangelo had looked forward to this opportunity for a long time, and he agreed to make the statue.
During the next two years, Michaelangelo devoted all his talent and all his labour to the task. When it was finished, his friends could see that he had created a wonderful work of art.
Michaelangelo called his statue "David" and invited the governor to come to the public square to look at it.
When the governor arrived, he found a crowd of people filling the great square. Michaelangelo and his friends expected him to express his satisfaction, but as he stood in silence before the statue, their disappointment and fear grew.
"No," the governor said at last.
"I am not quite satisfied, although in general the statue shows great skill. But you have made a mistake; the nose is too long."His friends looked at Michaelangelo with sadness and pity. But the sculptor smiled bravely and said, "It will take me only a few moments to change the nose." He went to the statue and began working, with his back to the governor. But those in front of him could see that he was only pretending to cut the marble. He held some marble dust in his hand, and as he worked, he let the dust fall to the ground. When he stepped back, the governor cried: "Good! Now there is more life in the face!"
The governor allowed the statue to remain in the square, and thousands have admired its strength and beauty. Today it is recognized as the artist's best work, and one of the finest achievements of art in the world. But there are many who, looking at the statue say: "The nose is rather long!"
