Respect for Wisdom

Many people like Shakespeare, but not too many would devote all their free time for four years to copy out eight volumes of this works in longhand. That's what two women in the city of Volzhsk, 50 km from Kazan, did.

Irina Mokrinskaya, 60, and her mother Alexandra Mokrinskaya, 90, copied sonnets and plays of Shakespeare in 36 leather-bound notebooks. Irina says it all started when she borrowed a volume of Shakespeare in Russian from a local professor. The great poet inspired her to copy the books. «You see, I've loved literature since childhood. I wanted to have in my hands this great wisdom», said Irina.

Most of the work was done by Alexandra Mokritskaya, as Irina, doctor by profession, was working in Kazan and had little time to work on the project as she arrived home late at night. «But 1 always sat and wrote at least an hour each day», she added. The notebooks are filled with postcards and magazine cut-outs that fit the plot, along with portraits of Shakespeare. At the beginning of each act you can see drawings, which Irina made herself. Later they received a set of Shakespeare works as a gift and gave it away.

lrina says her favourite Shakespeare works are «Henry VI11» and «Timon of Athens».

Many people don't understand the mother and the daughter. They often ask them, what for they had done it. This question astonishes them. There is no answer to it. They did this work not because they were short of books. They did it out of respect for wisdom.
